Dovish refers to an economic outlook which generally supports low interest rates as a means of encouraging growth within the economy. The term dovish is derived from the bird dove, which is known for its docile and placid nature. Doves believe that the negative implications of low interest rates are negligible in the larger scheme of things. The term is often used to describe a Fed official who is in favor of maintaining lower interest rates.
